Playing Around at Work

  • Students will look at various careers of the past through toys that mimicked them for the children of previous generations.
  • Using the Ohio Valley Room, City of Wheeling model, and other artifacts in the museum, students will be guided through a rough timeline of Wheeling, West Virginia, and see how common occupations changed from generation to generation.
  • Students will look at the history of Wheeling and the Ohio Valley, and see how events have changed the types of occupations that are prevalent.
  • As a learning activity, students will observe the two operating train layouts at the museum, and will discuss those two different “communities”. They will explore their industries, population size, geography, etc.
  • Students will create a personal timeline, showing the significant events of their own lives. Students will be asked to predict what some of the main events of their future lives might be and why.

This program will take roughly half a day, so it can be run either as a morning or afternoon program. If teachers wish to have their students eat a bag lunch onsite (which can be brought to the museum), we do have space for that, as well as a place to refrigerate your lunches if necessary.

West Virginia Content Standards and Objectives addressed (2nd Grade):

  • SS.2.3.2 Explore various occupations and how job opportunities in the community have changed.
  • SS.2.5.2 Explore the history of the community by identifying locally significant sites and people.
  • SS.2.5.7 Use and draw conclusions from various historic data collection methods (e.g., graphs, charts, timelines).

Ohio K-2 Social Studies Benchmarks addressed:

  • History Benchmark C: Compare daily life in the past and present demonstrating an understanding that while basic human needs remain the same, they are met in different ways in different times and places.
  • People in Societies Benchmark B: Identify ways that different cultures within the United States and the world have shaped our national heritage.
  • Social Studies Skills & Methods Benchmark A: Obtain information from oral, visual, print and electronic sources.
  • Social Studies Skills & Methods Benchmark C: Communicate information orally, visually or in writing.

Ohio most appropriate for Grade 2; academic content standards addressed:

  • History #4: Use historical artifacts, photographs, biographies, maps, diaries and folklore to answer questions about daily life in the past.
  • History #5: Identify the work that people performed to make a living in the past and explain how jobs in the past are similar and/or different from those of today.
  • History #6: Identify and describe examples of how science and technology have changed the daily lives of people and compare (a) forms of communication from the past and present, and (b) forms of transportation from the past and present.
